A Brief History

3,000 Years of Málaga

Not everyone knows that Málaga is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Its history dates back nearly 3,000 years, when the Phoenicians founded the settlement of Malaka.

Over the centuries, it developed as a vital trading port under Roman and Moorish rule. Among the most important monuments, you should visit the Roman Theater and the Alcazaba – a remnant of the Moorish era – as well as Gibralfaro Castle, which offers beautiful views of the city and the coast. You can explore the remnants of these historical eras throughout the Old Town, at the majestic Cathedral, or by discovering archaeological treasures in the Museum of Málaga.

In the 19th century, it became one of Spain's most important industrial centers, and today it attracts visitors as a modern city of culture, tourism, and a growing technological hub.

The Historic City Center

The historic center of Málaga is best explored without a plan – wandering through narrow streets, cafés, and shops along the lively Calle Larios. The charming corners and traditional restaurants create a unique atmosphere where the past naturally blends with the everyday Mediterranean lifestyle. The city's main square, Plaza de la Constitución, is a must-see landmark with its beautiful fountain and palm trees, perfect for soaking in the local energy.

The Port & Beaches

Muelle Uno is one of the best places for a walk — with restaurants, shops, and sea views. Nearby is La Malagueta beach, easy to reach from the center. Heading west: wide city beaches like Playa de San Andrés or Misericordia — excellent for running, cycling, or beach sports. To the east: quieter, more atmospheric spots like Playa de Pedregalejo with local seafood restaurants. Renting a bicycle is a great way to fully immerse in this authentic coastal vibe.

Málaga has a unique and authentic atmosphere that can be deeply felt in its churches and local traditions. A visit to Santuario de la Victoria is highly recommended - its richly decorated altar is considered one of the most beautiful in Andalusia. The city is also known for its religious processions – most famously during Semana Santa, but also taking place throughout the year. These are moments when the city reveals its true Andalusian soul.
